As the tree leaves fall and the months get colder, take advantage of the slower work pace by encouraging your community to give back. With a few easy community events, you’ll be able to boost the holiday spirit on your property and build the relationships you have with your residents.
Community Charity Events
If you want to get your community into the giving spirit, with relatively minimal effort, then consider promoting one of these charities. Rather than donating money, these charities promote giving specific items.
- Toys for Tots
Getting your residents to donate to Toys for Tots isn’t a new resident event idea, but it’s certainly one of the most accessible charities during this time of year. All toys (unused) will be given to less fortunate children in the local area. You can get your residents to drop off their donations at your leasing office (and drop them off yourself) or point your renters towards your local area’s drop off location.
- Family Giving Tree
If your property is located in San Francisco, California, then this charity might be right for you. The Family Giving Tree charity is similar to Toys for Tots, but is much more specific. Low-income Bay Area children ask for one specific Christmas present and the charity mobilizes to collect the exact toys they wanted. If your property is in this area, giving your residents the chance make Christmas special for a specific boy or girl nearby can be a worthwhile experience.
- Canned Food Drive
Donating canned foods to your local food bank can be an easy way to get your residents involved in community giving, especially if you have a few cans of untouched (unexpired) food in your pantry. Before you start your event, be sure to pass out information on what food is and isn’t accepted. Feeding America has these handy guidelines, but to be sure, call your local food bank as well.
- The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army accepts clothes, furniture, household goods, and appliances and you can schedule a free pick up. That being said, if you don’t want your leasing office to get crowded with donations, you can always direct your residents to their nearest drop-off location. While encouraging your renters to donate to the Salvation Army might not seem like a large community event, the Salvation Army incentivizes donating with tax refunds.
Community Fundraising Events
If you want to focus your efforts on bringing your community in for an event (or even upping your winter-time marketing), then consider these fundraising ideas.
- Wrapping Presents for Charity
If there’s a specific charity or non-profit organization you want to raise funds to, then this event is for you. Have you and your team members look over gift wrapping tutorials and then charge your residents $5 or so to professionally wrap their gifts in the common area. While wrapping, get to know your residents a little better.
- Holiday Spirit Contest
Get your residents to post holiday pictures on your community’s Facebook page or even decorate their balconies and doors for Christmas by throwing a contest. Let your residents vote on the best decorated or have your team choose one winner to receive a donation to the charity of their choice. This is a great way to boost the holiday spirit in your community and market to new applicants, while doing a little community giving.
Whether you decide to donate to charity or run a holiday-themed fundraising event for a nonprofit organization, your community will be able to give back in your own way.
