With Earth Day around the corner (Friday to be exact), why not showcase your support for the environment with your community? With resident events, eco-friendly community amenities and educational handouts, you’ll not only please your current residents, but attract applicants who are a little greener.
Profit from Green Resident Events
As it’s starting to warm up, utilize the good weather and outdoor spaces in your community to throw a few eco-friendly events. Encourage your residents to get into the Spring-spirit by throwing a contest to see who has the best decorated balcony. To enter, they can simply post up their pictures on your Facebook page. This will not only get your community involved with you and each other, but it will generate great curb appeal both in-person and online.
Once summer gets closer and school is finally out, throw a few kid-friendly events. You can do something as simple as making use of your community pool and throwing a pool party (complete with pool-toys) or creating Resident Event’s cardboard fortress. Recycle cardboard boxes from local businesses and transform them into a kid-friendly box fortress. This will utilize your outdoor community spaces, encourage your resident’s children to recycle and get out of the house, and seem extremely family-friendly to applicants. Who knew going green could have so many advantages?
Eco-Friendly Community Amenity Upgrades
Most renters are attracted to energy-efficient appliances because it significantly reduces their utility bill. Apply this same mentality to your entire community and you’ll be able to cut down on your property’s own electricity bills. While significant upgrades would be switching to an energy-efficient laundry service and using plants that don’t require a lot of water in your landscaping, you can start small by replacing outdoor lightbulbs for energy-efficient ones and implementing eco-friendly policies into your own office. Just by making a conscious effort to reduce waste, you can save money and the environment at the same time.
To attract new applicants, get the community involved, and utilize any unused outdoor space, see if your residents would be interested in a community garden. Or, if that seems too costly and time-consuming, consider planting fruit trees (with a “free-for-all” policy that’ll attract applicants). If you notice your community has a lot of bikes, propose installing bike racks around your property or within individual units. There are tons of green amenities that you can easily add that will showcase your community and attract new applicants. You just need to survey your residents to find out what their needs are.
Encourage Environmentally-Friendly Habits
If resident events are out of your budget and you want to quickly encourage eco-friendly awareness, let your residents know where your local recycling locations are. If you have properties in the NYC area, you can even point your residents to this handy recycling app, which maps out local public recycling plants. When sending out this information, try to use as little paper as possible. Encourage email, text, and social media as a way to communicate to your residents. This will not only save the environment, but reduce your paper costs as well.
Admittedly going green can be costly and time consuming, and it’s extremely easy to sit back and ignore the issue when you already have so much on your plate. Kill two birds with one stone by using eco-friendly events, upgrades, and in-office policies to make your residents happy and cut down on costs. It’s a win-win situation, so why not?
